Novak Djokovic can reclaim the world No 1 spot at the Australian Open if Andy Murray fails to reach the semi-finals.
But the Scot insisted his first defeat since September in the Qatar Open final will have no impact on the first Grand Slam of the seaon.
The Serb returned to winning ways against the Scot by edging a thrilling encounter 6-3 5-7 6-4 – his 25th victory over Murray in 36 meetings. The defeat ended Murray’s 28-match winning streak which dated back to his Davis Cup defeat to Juan Martin Del Potro.
The Wimbledon champion said: “I missed out on the important points but I still have a chance to win the Australian Open. It changes nothing even if it is disappointing to lose.”
