Usain Bolt To Give Back Olympic Medal

Usain Bolt and the 2008 Jamaica 4x100m relay team have been stripped of their Olympic gold medals.

It comes after teammate re-analysis of a drug sample offered by teammate Nesta Carter was found to have tested positive.

Carter, now 31, tested positive for the prohibited substance methylhexaneamine.

A statement released by the IOC disciplinary commission declared:

"The Athlete, Nesta Carter is found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation pursuant to the IOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing in 2008.

“[Carter] is disqualified from the men’s 4x100m relay event in which he participated upon the occasion of the Olympic Games Beijing 2008.

"The Jamaican team is disqualified from the men’s 4x100m relay event. The corresponding medals, medallist pins and diplomas are withdrawn and shall be returned."

Carter was on a on the list of 31 athletes who failed retests, which took place using the latest scientific techniques, in a bid to catch out drug cheats ahead of last year’s Olympics in Rio.

Methylhexanamine has been on the World Anti-Doping Agency code prohibited list since 2004, although it was reclassified on the 2011 list as a “specified substance”. It has often been used in dietary supplements in recent years.

Carter and the Jamaican National Olympic Committee were told of the adverse findings from the A sample LAST May - prior to Bolt's triumphs in Rio.

Carter ran the opening leg in the final nine years ago, which saw Jamaica claim victory in a world record time of 37.10 seconds.

Bolt can no longer lay claim to the title of being a “triple-triple” Olympic champ after the reanalysis of Carter’s blood and urine samples.

Bolt, 30, completed the unprecedented feat in Rio last summer. His successes in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay to add to his gold medals in the same events in 2008 and 2012.

All four members of the Jamaican team - also including Asafa Powell and Michael Frater - must now return their medals.

Trinidad & Tobago have now been awarded the 2008 relay gold, with Japan upgraded to silver and Brazil given bronze.
