Historic moment as referee Viktor Kassai awards penalty at FIFA Club World Cup after using video replay

It’s taken 10 years since Zinedine Zidane’s infamous headbutt in the World Cup final of 2006, but video replays have now been officially used for the first time in a competitive match.

FIFA are trialling technology at the tournament in FIFA World Club Cup in Japan, where Zidane’s Real Madrid are favourites to take the title.

They face Mexico’s Club America in the second semi-final on Thursday, but in Wednesday’s semi-final clash between Kashima Antlers and Atletico Nacional, Hungarian official Viktor Kassai awarded a penalty to the Japanese side after consulting using technology.

Kassai pointed to the spot after 30 minutes of the opening semi.

From a cross into the penalty area, Antlers fullback Daigo Nishi was fouled by Atletico’s Orlando Berrio, with a nudge at the far post.

Initially Kassai didn’t see the incident, and nor did any of the officials.

However, with play stopped, Kassai made his way over to the sidelines to consult with the technology, and watch the action over again.

Spotting the foul, the UEFA official duly blew his whistle and pointed to the penalty spot, from where Shoma Doi fired home.

The winner of the clash meets either Madrid or Club America on Sunday in the final in the Japanese capital.
